About Derek and his work

Social work was the mainstay of Derek’s early working life, and he subsequently developed and ran a successful business for many years, before deciding to retrain as a counsellor.
This background, coupled with rich life experience, gives a practical, down to earth flavour to his style of working with clients, and he is passionate about seeing others move into a place of wholeness, healing, and equilibrium, whatever their circumstances.
Derek's training initially began by approaching counselling through the lens of CBT.
His degree course at BTI led to a blending of Narrative Therapy with CBT, and since then he has developed an understanding of Attachment Theory, training in couples work using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
He has a particular interest in trauma work, and is an approved provider with ACC for working with trauma from sexual abuse. Derek is also an approved provider of counselling services with Victim Support, I Am Hope, Oranga Tamariki, and Work and Income.

Another facet of Derek’s work is with young children, and he has a custom-built playhouse at his Kapiti premises.

Here he works with children from 3-11 years old using principles of Child Centred Play Therapy. To find out more about Play Therapy, check out these links:

If you prefer, you can call 021 654 339, and leave a message if the phone is not answered.

Client Feedback

At a time under great stress and out of order in my relationships, Derek helped me face up to some changes that I needed to make for the sake of my marriage. His constructive directness took me to the heart of my problems very quickly, and gave me insights to myself which have been of great value ever since. I have valued his help greatly.

Since meeting with you we have really grown closer together which has been awesome. We had many conversations about what was talked about with you and feel as though meeting you with you at that time of our relationship was the best thing we could have done. So thank you so much for your time.

Definitely feeling the strength and resilience to push forward and make progress with my other goals now and deal with things differently in future. Many thanks for your help and support.

Thanks so much for your encouragement Derek. This is great stuff you have given me and I'm looking forward to doing the things you've suggested. A positive plan to be getting on with:)

Too many people in my life have been gentle and soft toward me with their messages of concerns and worry, and perhaps that's why I don't view these problems in my life as important. I encourage you to continue to be honest with me, stern and hard because while at the time it feels very uncomfortable and less than desirable, I feel that it has definitely shifted something within my perspective and approach to life. I respect you all the more for it.

I wanted to thank you for your emails in following up to the sessions, as well as the session themselves. They have been insightful and extremely valuable for me at this time.

Today has been a progressive start and I have seen some changes already.

I found the session really beneficial and I got a lot more out of it than I expected.

Thank you so much for your investment in us.
